The Harvard Bar

"So this is a Harvard bar, huh? I thought there'd be equations and shit on the wall."

Went to my local watering hole the other day... and ate chicken wings.  The place is named Grevey's and it's located directly next to a gas station in Falls Church, VA.

But, for a bar near a gas station, these babies were pretty tasty.  I was not a big fan of the lettuce that they set the wings on, but the carrots were a nice touch.

For those who may be wondering, that's bleu cheese in the little cup: my second favorite dip for wings.

Chili's Standard

I'm a big fan of the Chili's Happy Hour Wings.  You get a plate of juicy, saucy wings for a few bucks.  Make sure to get there after 2:00 but be aware that shift change takes place around 3.  So, cut your bartenders some slack, bring a book, and chill.

Don't forget to ask for extra naps as these bad boys come out saucy!!!

Chics 'N' Wings:

Went to a place I'd never been to in McLean, VA the other day... Chics 'N' Wings.  I'm not going to say much about the atmosphere (it was packed) but the wings were excellent--and some were quite unique.  I grabbed up a sampler of 16 wings--picking what seemed to be the most tasty four flavors.

From the bottom, moving clockwise (with descriptions as seen on the menu).

The Style Buffalo Wings
Originated - 1972 Thailand. Tossed in our spicy Thai dressing
and topped w/ chopped peanuts.

Heavenly Honey Ale Wings
Originaged - 1969 Fairfax, VA. Lightly glazed w/ honey
& our special blend of spices.

Dr. Frank's Extra spicy Buffalo wings
Originated - 1964 Buffalo, NY Not for the faint of heart,
try these if you like'em spicy.

Tyson's Cilantro Sauce Buffalo Wings
Originated - 2007 McLean, VA. Tossed in our tangy cilantro sauce.

My favorite were actually the Thai Style Wings.  Usually I'm not a fan of mixing up the wing sauce as I'm partial to just hot sauce; however, the crunch of the chopped peanuts on top and the zesty Thai sauce won me over quite quickly.  The most unique on the plate were easily the Cilantro Sauce Wings.  These wings came coated in fresh cilantro--though they weren't my favorite, they're definitely worth trying if one gets a chance.

Probably the most underwhelming wings were the Dr. Frank's.  I happen to love spicy wings but these wings didn't seem to have a kick at all--if you're going to warn your customers about how spicy the wings are, the wings should live up to the promise.  Though the wing texture was good: crispy, not too saucy, these wings just didn't do it for me.  My second favorite of the four were the Heavenly honey.  The sweet and spicy combo seemed to hit the spot.

I look forward to going back to Chics 'N' Wings for the Thai wings; however, there are some other unique wings on the menu that I also look forward to sampling:

Herculean Buffalo Wings
Originated - 3000 BC athens, Greece. Smothered in feta cheese
and our special Greek sauce.

Kentucky's Own Bleu Cheese
Buffalo Wings
Originated - 1985 Lexington, K.Y. Covered in bleu cheese crumbles
and our delicious white sauce.

Caribbean Wings
Originated - 1700 Port Royal. Caribbean spiced dry rubbed
wings and topped w/ fresh chopped parsley.

All in all, I was quite pleased with the flavors coming out of the kitchen.  I would definitely go back to Chics 'N' Wings.

Starting a new blog--on my favorite food!

So, when I was down in Raleigh this weekend, I had the idea of putting together a chicken wing blog to document my feelings about my favorite food.

An NC State Night Game--Go Wolfpack!!

Now that I've decided to do this blog, I figured I would get some input on what the title of the blog should be:

The winner (by an 8 to 2 margin) goes to: Good Wing Hunting, which I am happy about because it was my pick as well!

To give a little background, I've been eating chicken wings on a solid basis since I began ordering from Wing King Kempsville. My passion for their wings drove me into one of my first jobs during highschool as a Wing King delivery driver (oh the joys of driving hot wings around in a pre cell-phone age!)

Since about 1999 I've been taking mental notes on what makes the perfect chicken wing... alas, over 12 years later I am going to start writing those notes down. The vision for this blog will be to take pictures of wings, comment on what makes a good wing, and (yes) eat wings!

As a friend of mine from Buffalo always said: "Wings outside of Buffalo are nothing but hot chicken pieces." I have to agree given that this is the birthplace of the chicken wing; however, instead of using the term "hot chicken pieces," I will be using the generic term "chicken wings."

Stay tuned for some tasty pics!
